Could you be part of a co-housing community? Is this for you?
If co-housing might be of interest to you, please register your interest with us here.
We will be back in touch with more detailed information on what is involved
When we have sufficient numbers in an area, we will invite you to come to a meeting with other interested people to explore shared interest in proceeding to the next step
-
Come to a meeting that we will organize with other interested people in your area to better understand what is involved and whether this is for you. You may already know others who are curious, so bring them too.
Participate in a community-building process – determining the features and benefits of the community you want to develop.
Begin the process of looking for a suitable site – we will help with that.
Engage with a developer/builder – we will help with that too.
Agree on the funding model with the developer – what sort of deposits will be needed and at what stages. Most buyers will not want to sell their own homes before the new home is ready
Work with the architect/developer to design the homes and shared amenities.
-
The costs of building each home will include a pro-rata contribution to the costs of building the shared amenities.
The experience of other co-housing communities is that unit values are also increased, thus compensating for the increased costs. Most established communities report a long waiting list to buy
There can be restrictions on selling to ensure that new buyers are committed to the Community Charter. This can be handled in different ways, e.g., selling back to the community with independent valuations or approval of any sale by the community. The community itself will decide from the outset what if any, restrictions it wants to impose
